The town is named for Lt. General Jimmy Doolittle of World War II fame who bombed Tokyo in a daring raid, which helped to turn the tide of the war in the Pacific. The settlement was originally called Centertown because it was halfway between Rolla and Newburg. This name, coined by a local man named Monroe Ramsey, caught on over the years.

By 1910, Jimmy Doolittle was attending school in Los Angeles. When his school attended the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field, Doolittle saw his first airplane. [9] He attended Los Angeles City College after graduating from Manual Arts High School, together with later film director Frank Capra, in Los Angeles.

ChiArts was previously located at the Douglas school campus for 2009–10 and 2010–11 school years, where ChiArts shared the campus with John J. Pershing West Middle School. It shared the Doolittle West space at 521 East 35th Street in Bronzeville and the third floor with the James R. Doolittle, Jr. Elementary School next door from 2011 to 2014.
