He served as the associate pastor at St. Cecilia Parish in Ames from 1948–1950, St. Martin Parish in Cascade from 1950 to 1952, and at Nativity Parish in Dubuque from 1952 to 1955. In 1956 he was named assistant chancellor and chaplain of St. Anthony’s Home for the Aged in Dubuque.
With Calvary Cemetery running out of room, Resurrection cemetery was established in 1940. [1] Archbishop John Gregory Murray consecrated the cemetery on June 30, 1940. Born in St. Lucas, Iowa to Henry and Mary Anna (Kuennen) Schmitt, Schmitt studied at Columbia College (now Loras College) in Dubuque, Iowa [2] and graduated in 1932. [3] He then studied in Rome for the priesthood. He was ordained on December 8, 1935. Father Schmitt was first assigned as an associate at Saint Mary's Church in Dubuque.
Matthew Powers, who was an area farmer, donated land for the church and cemetery. The church was built by 1875 for $4,000. A bell was added to the church, it had the distinction of being the largest bell in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The bell weighed 5,247 pounds. For many years the bell stood in a tower at the north side of the church building.
Eventually a parish church was built at the current location at 90 S. Algona, Dubuque. In 1967, a new parish church was built, in a mid-century modern style. [1] The church was a circular structure where the congregation sat in a semicircle around the altar. The church is noted for its stained glass windows, designed by Robert Leader. [1]
