Hico Independent School District is a public school district based in Hico, Texas . Located in Hamilton County , portions of the district extend into Bosque , Comanche , and Erath counties. In 2009, the school district was rated " recognized " by the Texas Education Agency .

Despite growing white settlements in Texas, Indian tribal presences remained. In 1867, Comanche raiders attacked a school where Ann Whitney was the teacher. She helped students escape before finally succumbing to 18 Comanche arrows. [6] [7] In 1882, the Hico community initiated the annual Hico Old Settlers' Reunion. [8]
The Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) was a hyperspectral earth observation sensor that operated on the International Space Station (ISS) from 2009 to 2014. HICO collected hyperspectral satellite imagery of the Earth's surface from the ISS.
In the 2016-2017 school year, the school district had a total of 603 students, ranging from early childhood education and pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The class of 2016 included 52 graduates; the annual drop-out rate across grades 9-12 was less than 1%.
