The tournament was played in two different stages. In the Preliminary round (first stage), the eight participants were divided into two pools of four teams. A single round-robin format was played within each pool to determine the teams position in the pool.
Kayoko Sugiyama (Japanese: 杉山 加代子; born 31 October 1961) is a Japanese former volleyball player who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. In 1984, she was a member of the Japanese team that won the bronze medal in the Olympic tournament.
