Walnut is located west of Corinth at the intersection of U.S. Route 72 and Mississippi Highway 15.The town's older business district is concentrated along Mississippi Highway 354, just east of its intersection with MS 15.
The school is a two-time National Blue Ribbon School [4] (1992–93 and 1997–98), six-time California Distinguished school (1991, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2005 and 2009), and a California Gold Ribbon School (2017). [5] [6] Walnut High School has offered the International Baccalaureate program since 1999.

The school was named Chalybeate Springs Institute and operated under that name until 1900, when it became Chalybeate Springs High School. In 1957, Chalybeate school consolidated with Walnut and today it only serves ages kindergarten through the eighth grade.
