The Immigration and Naturalisation Service, Dutch: Immigratie en Naturalisatiedienst (IND), is a Dutch government agency that handles the admission of foreigners in the Netherlands. It is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security.
The integration law for immigrants to the Netherlands, known as the Civil Integration Act 2021 (Dutch: Wet inburgering 2021), is a law designed to ensure that long-term immigrants to the Netherlands, who are not citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland, integrate into Dutch society.
The minister of asylum and migration (Dutch: Minister van Asiel en Migratie) is the head of the Ministry of Asylum and Migration and a member of the cabinet of the Netherlands and the Council of Ministers. [1] The current minister is Marjolein Faber of the Party for Freedom (PVV), who has been in office since 2 July 2024.
In the Netherlands, the citizen education for new citizens is called "inburgeringsplicht". In many cases, the foreigner is obliged to learn very basic Dutch and basic knowledge about Dutch society while still abroad. The immigrant must pass an exam abroad before receiving a visa for temporary residence.
Applications are submitted locally at the municipality (gemeente in Dutch) together with the mandatory registration of residence, but they are processed centrally at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst, IND). There is a charge (€53 in 2015) associated with the application.
