The Samuel D. Philbrook House is a historic house at 162 Main Street in Bethel, Maine. Built in 1878-79 by a local businessman, it is probably the most elaborate Italianate residence in the community, and one of the finest of the type in Oxford County. It now houses a retail space in the first floor and attached barn, with living space above.
John Philbrook, the buyer, was a native of Shelburne, New Hampshire who attended Bethel's Gould Academy. He began his career in farming and lumber, and eventually became a merchant, and served several terms in the Maine State Senate and as a county commissioner. The Bethel Inn Resort was built in 1913 with funding from his patients and dedicated to him. Dr. Gehring retired from practice in 1925 and died in 1932. [2] The property has since seen use as a medical facility, but is presently (2014) vacant. Construction vehicles and a construction fence were on the property July 4, 2024.
The block was designed by George M. Coombs, and built in 1891 for Fred and Elmer Cole, and is the most prominent building in Bethel's small downtown area. The construction was apparently a financial stretch for the brothers, who soon lost the property to foreclosure.
