After a stroke, Mulliken died in Chicago at 74, on Thursday, July 17. He was survived by his wife, Lorna Filippini-Mulliken, two daughters and a son from his first marriage, siblings and numerous grandchildren. He had suffered two former strokes. An avid swimmer, he had formerly served for 20 years as a past president of Chicago Masters swimming.

June Krauser (June 13, 1926 – August 2, 2014) was an American swimmer. Known as the "Mother of Masters Swimming," she was one of the founders of U.S. Masters Swimming and set 154 national records and 73 world records.
After college, he continued to swim and trained and competed in Masters Swimming for Evanston Masters. Hanley worked as a professor and swimming coach at the Chicago City Colleges. In the early 1950s, after she married, Barbara Jensen Reeve was a swimmer with the Chicago Town Club. [13] In 1972 she began competing in masters swimming. Between 1972 and 1979 she won 42 national titles and set eight national or world records in the backstroke. [14]
In 1986, he set a Masters world record in the short course 100-meter butterfly for the 45–49 age group. Most recently, he placed in the top ten in the 200-meter backstroke (short course) in 2011, and in the top ten of several events during the 2010 USMS Spring National Championships in May and in the Summer Championships in August.

Masters swimming is a special class of competitive swimming for swimmers 25 years and older. Premasters is normally included as well, from 18 years old (Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Australia) or 20 years old ( Europe ).
