The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is Europe's largest wildlife conservation charity. A lake at the RSPB West Sedgemoor nature reserve in Somerset This is a list of RSPB reserves.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charitable organisation registered in England and Wales [1] and in Scotland. [2] It was founded in 1889. It works to promote conservation and protection of birds and the wider environment through public awareness campaigns, petitions and through the operation of nature reserves throughout the United Kingdom.
The reserve sits on the Greensand Ridge, overlooking the River Ivel valley and includes areas of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, acid grassland and heathland. The area surrounding The Lodge was covered in heathland prior to the 19th century, when it was ploughed up for agriculture or planted with non-native conifer species for forestry.
Entry to the reserve is free for RSPB members, although a fee is charged for non-members. The site is open daily from 9 am to sunset or 9 pm, which ever is later. Except for 25 and 26 December, it is open year-round. The visitor centre and facilities are open from 10 am and close at 4 pm from November to February, 5 pm the rest of the year.
The reserve was bought by the RSPB in 1977 using money raised in a sponsored birdwatch by the RSPB's junior branch. The name Fowlmere comes from the nature of the site before 1800 when it was an area of open water which was a habitat for large numbers of wildfowl. In 1850 attempts were made to drain the area but failed.
The quarry was redeveloped as a reserve in conjunction with Hanson [4] and Staffordshire County Council. [6] Islands and spits were created in the former gravel pits. [4] Ten hectares of Willow were removed [4] and the edges of pools re-profiled to a gentle slope of 1:30, instead of the 1:3 used during quarrying, [4] to provide greater areas of mud and thus appeal to wading birds.
