Many reservoirs which were constructed for one purpose e.g. industry, may now serve different or additional purposes e.g amenity or, as in many cases, have been abandoned entirely. Reservoirs range in size with many under 1 acre in area serving local needs, up to Llyn Trawsfynydd which extends to 1,128 acres (456 ha).
Llwyn-onn Reservoir is the largest and southernmost of the three reservoirs in the Taf Fawr valley in South Wales. Cardiff Corporation Waterworks obtained an act of Parliament in 1884 to authorise construction of the reservoirs, to increase the water supply for Cardiff, but construction of Llwyn-onn Reservoir did not start until 1911 and was completed in the 1920s.

Lake Vyrnwy is a reservoir in Powys, Wales, created in 1888 by flooding the head of the River Vyrnwy (Welsh: Afon Efyrnwy) valley.The river flows from the dam into Shropshire where it converges with the River Severn near the village of Melverley on the Welsh border and outflows into the Bristol Channel.

Talybont Reservoir (Welsh: Cronfa Ddŵr Tal-y-bont) is the largest stillwater reservoir in the central Brecon Beacons at 318 acres (1.29 km 2).
