The School of Communication Studies is an institute for Journalism and communication studies in India which is a part of the Panjab University located in Chandigarh (India). The School began in 1941 in the University of the Punjab, Lahore (now in Pakistan), it is the oldest institute of mass communication in South Asia.
It provides practical training for journalists and communications professionals across the globe working with every type of media. Its online academy Journalism Now is a series of interactive courses designed and led by industry experts providing e-learning in digital and multimedia skills.
NIMCJ achieved the 13th rank in 2018, [7] 14th rank in 2019, [8] 22nd rank in 2020, [9] and 24th rank in 2021, [10] according to Outlook India ranking of top mass communication colleges in India. Additionally, NIMCJ ranked 34th among top mass communication colleges in India by India Today in 2019, 33rd in 2023, and 29th in 2024.
Admission to these courses is through an All India Entrance Examination followed by group discussions and interviews. It also offers a diploma course in Development Journalism for non-aligned and developing countries. [6] The institute was originally set up to provide training to the officers of the Indian Information Service.
The DSC 2-year programme is a broad-based course. While the first year in school covers some basic courses, in the second year, three specializations are covered. The programme aims to offer an integration of communication and management at one level and theory and practical interface at another level.
