Nālandā University (NU; ISO: Nālandā Vishwavidyalaya) is a premier research university located in the ancient city of Rajgir in the state of Bihar, India.Designated as an Institute of National Importance (INI) and excellence, it is the flagship project of the Ministry of External Affairs (India) [8] and the direct successor of the Nalanda monastery of medieval Magadha.
Nalanda University (also known as Nalanda International University) is an international and research-intensive university located in the historical city of Rajgir in Bihar, India. The present campus of the Mahavihara is some 100 km from the metropolis of Patna, situated on the southern bank of the historical lake Indrapuskarani. The ruins of the ancient University of Nalanda lie close to the northern bank. During India's first Global Buddhist Conference in 2021, the Dalai Lama inaugurated two new buildings at the University.

The Persian historian Minhaj-i-Siraj, in his chronicle the Tabaqat-i-Nasiri, reported an attack on a Buddhist monastery in which all the Buddhist monks were killed. In 1995, the Nalanda Open University Act [6] was passed by the legislature of Bihar replacing the earlier ordinance, and this university thereafter came under the authority and jurisdiction of the passed act. [7] It is named after the famous Buddhist Nalanda University of Nalanda, the ancient seat of learning.
