Lee Vining (formerly Leevining, Poverty Flat, and Lakeview) [4] is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) [2] in Mono County, California, United States. [2] It is located 25 miles (40 km) south-southeast of Bridgeport. Lee Vining is located on the southwest shore of Mono Lake. The population was 217 as of the 2020 census. [3]
The tributaries of Mono Lake include Lee Vining Creek, Rush Creek and Mill Creek which flows through Lundy Canyon. [7] The basin was formed by geological forces over the last five million years: basin and range crustal stretching and associated volcanism and faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada. It is located against the southern rim of the Mono Basin, 12.5 miles (20 km) south of Lee Vining. [4] The majority of the developed community is spread narrowly along a five-mile stretch of California State Route 158, [5] known as the June Lake Loop Road, or in the populated areas, Boulder Drive.
The peak is situated north of Lee Vining Canyon, and 1.8 miles (2.9 km) southeast of Mount Warren, which is the nearest higher neighbor. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 5,300 feet (1,600 meters) above Mono Lake in less than four miles (6.4 km), and 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above Lee Vining Creek in two miles (3.2 km).
Route 120 joins U.S. Route 395 in Lee Vining just north of the US 395 bridge over Lee Vining Creek. The creek is used for hydropower generation at the Poole power plant operated by Southern California Edison, located within Lee Vining Canyon.
