Rex assembles floats using techniques that have spanned generations, entirely by hand. Contrary to popular belief, Rex floats are not built over Civil War-era cotton wagons; they are instead built on wagons formerly employed by the City of New Orleans to collect refuse in the late 19th century. The Rex parade is put on by The School of Design.
This original design depicted a bust of Rex the King of Carnival on one side of the doubloon with the arms of the School of Design (the organization that stages the Rex Mardi Gras parade) on the other side. The Byam Shaw School of Art, often known simply as Byam Shaw, was an independent art school in London, England, which specialised in fine art and offered foundation and degree level courses.
