Casual dress became more unisex and often consisted of plaid button down shirts worn with slim blue jeans, comfortable slacks, or skirts. Traditionally, trousers had been viewed by western society as masculine, but by the early 1960s, it had become acceptable for women to wear them every day.
Today, the word most commonly refers to a girl's or woman's dress shirt, although there is considerable confusion between a true blouse and a women's shirt. [6] It can also refer to a man's shirt if it is a loose-fitting style (e.g. poet shirts and Cossack shirts), [ 3 ] [ 7 ] though it rarely is.
In 17th century, men's shirts and cuffs were embellished with fine lace. The shirt was worn under the Justaucorps in the 18th century. Traditionally dress shirts were worn by men and boys, whereas women and girls often wore blouses, sometimes known as chemises.
