When underbalanced drilling is used, mud pulse telemetry can become unusable. This is usually because, in order to reduce the equivalent density of the drilling mud, a compressible gas is injected into the mud. This causes high signal attenuation which drastically reduces the ability of the mud to transmit pulsed data. In this case, it is ...
Logging while drilling (LWD) is a technique of conveying well logging tools into the well borehole downhole as part of the bottom hole assembly (BHA).. Although the terms Measurement while drilling (MWD) and LWD are related, within the context of this section, the term MWD refers to directional-drilling measurements, e.g., for decision support for the smooth operation of the drilling, while ...
In 2010, the company introduced several new technologies, including a new, in-house-developed gyroscope—which is the primary sensor used across a range of Gyrodata technologies and services—a new mud motor, and a new GWD system designed to provide surveys at up to 40° of inclination. GWD systems for wells with up to 70° of inclination ...
Air drilling requires a faster up hole volume as the cuttings will fall faster down the annulus when the compressors are taken off the hole compared to having a higher viscosity fluid in the hole. Because air is compressible mud pulse telemetry measurement while drilling (MWD) tools which require an incompressible fluid can not work.
Coupled with the development of measurement while drilling tools (using mud pulse telemetry, networked or wired pipe or electromagnetism (EM) telemetry, which allows tools down hole to send directional data back to the surface without disturbing drilling operations), directional drilling became easier.
Accordingly, I suggest merging the Mud pulse telemetry article into the Mud Pulse Telemetry section of Measurement While Drilling and redirecting Mud pulse telemetry to Measurement While Drilling#Mud Pulse Telemetry--TRosenbaum 13:52, 8 February 2007 (UTC) Concur completely.axharr 2 April 2007

Mud logging technicians in an oil field drilling operation determine positions of hydrocarbons with respect to depth, identify downhole lithology, monitor natural gas entering the drilling mud stream, and draw well logs for use by oil company geologist. Rock cuttings circulated to the surface in drilling mud are sampled and discussed.
