For the crop parameters, note that since we're going for a desired width, the size of the image being cropped from will vary depending on what crop_left and crop_right are set to. This is much, much harder with {{tl|CSS image crop: You have to calculate a scaling ratio and apply it to every parameter. Admittedly, cropping a tiny bit out of a large image with any sort of CSS image crop is very inefficient: It still has to load a thumbnail big enough to crop that tiny bit from.

The resulting image is larger than the original, and preserves all the original detail, but has (possibly undesirable) jaggedness. The diagonal lines of the "W", for example, now show the "stairway" shape characteristic of nearest-neighbor interpolation. Other scaling methods below are better at preserving smooth contours in the image.
