In 1010, Emperor Lý Thái Tổ moved the capital from Hoa Lư to Đại La, which decision was explained in his Chiếu dời đô (Royal proclamation of moving capital): he saw a Rồng vàng (golden dragon) fly around on the clear blue sky, so he changed the name of Đại La to Thăng Long, meaning "Vietnam's bright and developed future".
In 1861, the French colonial government established Côn Đảo Prison on the island to house political prisoners. In 1954, it was turned over to the South Vietnamese government, who continued to use it for the same purpose. Notable prisoners held at Côn Sơn in the 1930s included Phạm Văn Đồng, Nguyễn An Ninh and Lê Đức Thọ. [1]

It is the site of a 99-year land concession by The Royal Group to develop the island, and is one of the islands within the Koh Rong Marine National Park that was established in 2018. Dragon House (Vietnamese: Bến Nhà Rồng) or Dragon House Wharf, Dragon House Harbour, officially known as Ho Chi Minh Museum, Ho Chi Minh City Branch, was the original commercial port of Saigon. The construction began in 1862 and more than a year later, in 1863, the house was completed.
