Working with the New York legislature, Wingate was able to appropriate funds for the purchase of 70 acres of farmland in Long Island, which the NRA intended to construct a shooting range on. The Creedmoor Rifle Range was officially opened on June 21, 1873. [6] Wingate eventually became the president of the NRA, serving in that role until 1900. [7]
Sharps also fabricated special long-range target versions for the popular Creedmoor style of 1,000-yard (910 m) target shooting. [7] Many modern black powder cartridge silhouette shooters use original and replica Sharps rifles to target metallic silhouettes cut in the shapes of animals at ranges up to 500 metres (550 yd).
