Air Force is a complex multi-player wargame that allows players to simulate air combat over Europe during World War II. Thirty airplanes from the Luftwaffe , RAF and USAAF are included. Each airplane has a corresponding card with numerical data that tracks maneuverability, speed, armaments, ammunition, damage, altitude and attitude.
Each character has a unique selection of planes to fly and has a different branch of missions to complete. Completion of some missions unlocks secret missions and hidden planes for replays. After the game is once completed, a secret hangar becomes available. As the game is completed and medals are earned, more secret planes become available.
Missions typically involve either seeking out and destroying the enemy or escorting friendly craft to a certain destination. The enemies encountered in Airforce Delta are diverse and range from air to ground and water capabilities and from offensive to defensive situations. Mission maps are based on fictional locations.

The series began in 1999 with Airforce Delta for Dreamcast, with its last main series game being the 2004 Airforce Delta Strike. The series has been compared to Ace Combat in its gameplay.

The name 50 Mission Crush is an allusion to a type of hat. The game manual states: A "fifty mission crush" is an Army Air Corps, or Air Force, service cap that has the stiffening ring removed, and is worn crushed and battered. This cap is obviously out of uniform, however steeped in tradition.
