Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is a 932-acre (377-hectare) park located in the Sierra Pelona in northern Los Angeles County, California. It is known for its rock formations, the result of sedimentary layering and later seismic uplift.

Vasquez Rocks has long been used as a popular filming location by the Hollywood movie industry, most notably The Flintstones movie, Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles, The Invaders episode "The Saucer", and the Star Trek episode "Arena." The 1971 movie Duel filmed extensively in the area, as was the western film More Dead Than Alive.
The Vasquez Formation was described as "Vasquez Series" by Sharp in 1935, [1] and further described by Jahns (1939). [2] The formation crops out in the eponymous Vasquez Rocks, part of the Los Angeles Basin. [3] The formation was deposited in a series of minibasins between the San Gabriel and San Andreas Faults. [4]
