At the southern end of the lake, just east of the village, is Candle Lake Golf Resort. It is a par 72, 18-hole, grass greens course that was built in 1977. There are three tee-offs at each hole with the blue totalling 6,543 yards, white 5,855 yards, and red 5,067 yards. There is also a pro shop, restaurant, and cabin rentals. [13] [14]
In the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the Resort Village of Candle Lake recorded a population of 840 living in 413 of its 1,665 total private dwellings, a 9.8% change from its 2011 population of 765. With a land area of 63.32 km 2 (24.45 sq mi), it had a population density of 13.3/km 2 (34.4/sq mi) in 2016. [4]
The level in Candle Lake is regulated by a four-bay 3.1 m (10 ft) high concrete dam, constructed in 1978–1979 and operated by the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.It is located at the south-eastern corner of the lake at Hanson Bay and it discharges into the Torch River.
In the 2001 Census of Population, the Resort Village of Katepwa Beach recorded a population of 189, a 83.5% change from its 1996 population of 103. With a land area of 2.89 km 2 (1.12 sq mi), it had a population density of 65.4/km 2 (169.4/sq mi) in 2001.
Shields also has a 9-hold golf course [5] and is a short drive from Blackstrap Provincial Park, which is on the eastern side of the lake and features Mount Blackstrap, camping, picnicking, boating, and swimming. On the north-eastern shore of the lake is another golf course, Lakeside Golf Resort, which opened June 1, 2021. [6]
