The Last King of Scotland is a 2006 historical drama film directed by Kevin Macdonald from a screenplay by Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock.Based on Giles Foden's 1998 novel, its plot depicts the dictatorship of Ugandan President Idi Amin through the perspective of Nicholas Garrigan, a fictional Scottish doctor.
Whitaker won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the historical drama The Last King of Scotland (2006). Whitaker made his directorial debut with the television film Strapped (1993), and directed the films Waiting to Exhale (1995), Hope Floats (1998), and First Daughter (2004).
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor, BAFTA Award for Best Actor, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland (2006). In 2022 he won the Honorary Palme d'Or.

Amin is the subject of English journalist Giles Foden's novel The Last King of Scotland (1998), which focuses on Idi Amin's Uganda through the eyes of a young Scottish physician. In 2006, the book was adapted into a movie, where Amin is portrayed by Forest Whitaker.
