The part of SR 160 through and north of downtown Sacramento began as part of Legislative Route 3, which was added to the state highway system under the first bond issue, passed in 1910, [33] and left the city on the 16th Street Bridge over the American River, following Del Paso Boulevard, El Camino Avenue, and Auburn Boulevard to Roseville.
Elkhorn Boulevard west of SR 99 (without the county route designation) continues west to the Sacramento International Airport, passing through the Metro Air Park industrial complex. Elkhorn used to end at Power Line Road but was extended into the airport as an alternate route as Interstate 5 is the main route to the airport.
