The Blackstone Hotel is a historic 290-foot (88 m) 21-story hotel on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive in the Michigan Boulevard Historic District in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. Built between 1908 and 1910, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building briefly served as Chicago's first theater, [1] and hosted the first Chicago Theatre Company in November 1837 in an abandoned dining room. [14] [15] By 1839, it returned to service as a hotel, [8] but was destroyed by fire in 1851, [1] and subsequently torn down. [16] The Wigwam was built in its place nine years later. [17]
Included also are numerous religious buildings, 15 hotels, [3] and six theaters. [4] Fully 55 are located in the downtown Loop area, including the Loop Retail Historic District itself. Chicago is a historic and continuing world port city due to its location on the Great Lakes, which has an outlet to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Chicago's Downtown Theatre District is also found within this area, along with numerous restaurants and hotels. Chicago has a famous skyline which features many of the tallest buildings in the world as well as the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District. Chicago's skyline is spaced out throughout the downtown area.
Illinois Theatre, Chicago, Illinois, c.1909. The young settlement of Chicago in 1834 saw its first commercial production by a fire eater and ventriloquist, Mr. Brown. In 1837, the first resident theater company, the short-lived Chicago Theater, opened in the Sauganash Hotel.
Chicago's earliest surviving building, the Henry B. Clarke House (built c. 1836) is on the Near South Side, close to the Prairie Avenue District of residential Chicago architecture. Architect Louis Sullivan's work is represented by the Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building, and Auditorium Building.
