Lee County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina.As of the 2020 census, the population was 63,285. [1] The county seat is Sanford. [2]Lee County comprises the Sanford, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary, NC Combined Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 2,368,947 in 2023.
Sanford is 42 miles (68 km) southwest of Raleigh, the state capital, 57 miles (92 km) southeast of Greensboro, and 36 miles (58 km) northwest of Fayetteville.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.3 square miles (75.9 km 2), of which 29.1 square miles (75.3 km 2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km 2), or 0.88%, are water. Notable buildings include the East Sanford Graded School, Sanford Congregational Christian Church (1904; 1924; 1949), Deaton-Makepeace House (c. 1900), and Sanford Chapel (1940s). [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. [1]

The Steele Creek community derives its name from the small creek bearing the same name. It is believed that name "Steele" was the family surname of Scotch-Irish immigrants who settled in the area in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. [8]
Steele Township is located in western central Rowan County and occupies 21.97 square miles (56.9 km 2). There are no incorporated municipalities in Steele Township. The northern border of the township follows Beaverdam and Withrow Creeks, NC Hwy 801, and the Norfolk Southern railroad to Second Creek.
