Kurumi Tokisaki transfers into Shido's class revealing herself to be a Spirit. During her time touring the school with Shido they're followed by Origami and Tohka, but as Shido attempting to seduce Kurumi she is also attempting to do get closer to him. Kurumi code-named "Nightmare" is known to be the most deadly Spirit.
As Shido is waiting to cross the street, he sees Kurumi on the other side. After crossing, he is surprised by Kurumi who then asks him on a date all of a sudden. Shido thinks of rejecting her invitation but is curious about her acting out of character, adding on with her fake crying, he eventually agrees to do so.
Not giving up, Kurumi leads Shido to meet her past self (eye-patch Kurumi) with the method to alter history. Eye-patch Kurumi is initially skeptical but after communicating with the Kurumi in the present, they reach an agreement. Eye-patch Kurumi sends Shido back in time a few hours, thus giving him a second chance to change history.
Moreover, Shido and his companions face the opposition of the AST (Anti-Spirit Team), a special unit designed to suppress the threat posed by Spirits by eliminating them, which is backed by DEM (Deus Ex Machina) Industries, a conglomerate led by Sir Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott who intends to exploit the powers of the Spirits for his own agenda.
