South Dakota's first senator, Richard Pettigrew, introduced a bill to fund the structure, recommending that native Sioux quartzite be used for its construction.
Joseph Schwartz, who designed several other buildings in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area, was hired to design the hotel. The total cost of construction was $250,000. After its opening on October 15, 1912, the hotel became very successful, accommodating prominent visitors and hosting frequent events in its ground-floor dining room and ballroom.
