Lightning Bar (1951–1960) was an American Quarter Horse who raced and subsequently became a breeding stallion. He was bred by his lifelong owner Art Pollard of Sonoita, Arizona, and was the offspring of Three Bars, a Thoroughbred, and Della P, a Quarter Horse mare from Louisiana, then noted for the breeding of sprint horses.
Among his famous offspring were Mr. Bar None, Gay Bar King, Sugar Bars, Lightning Bar, Tonto Bars Gill, St. Bar, Steel Bars, and Bar Money. Doc Bar died on July 20, 1992, [1] and was buried on the Jensen/Ward Doc Bar Ranch in Paicines, California. [4] Doc Bar was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association's (or AQHA) AQHA Hall of Fame in 1993. [5] In 2007 Western Horseman magazine chose Doc as number two on their list of top ten ranch horse bloodlines. [6]
A decade after Lightning Bar was one of the first half-breds to make a name for himself, Eternal Sun "raised the bar for all of the two-way race and show hopefuls that followed". A Colorado man was killed by a lightning strike on his ranch Saturday, marking the first lightning-caused death in 2024. The ranch is located near Rand, about 120 miles northwest of Denver.
In the early 1920s, he was involved with the Vermejo Park Ranch guest ranch. In 1925, he bought land in the old 5,500-acre (22 km 2) Pecos Pueblo Grant for a guest ranch called Forked Lightning Ranch. The main ranch house was one of the first works of John Gaw Meem. The ranch is now part of the Pecos National Historic Park.
