Carroll County was formed on January 15, 1851, from sections of Pottawattamie County. It was named after Charles Carroll [3] of Carrollton, Maryland, the only Roman Catholic and longest-living signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1855, the county government was established in Carrollton and in 1858, the first courthouse was built.
Fr. Joseph Kuemper (1855-1923) left his mark and an important legacy on Carroll county's 20th century history. St. Bernard High School in Breda consolidated into Kuemper High in 1979. [1] The Christ the King School in Breda, [2] along with the Holy Trinity Catholic grade school, consolidated into Kuemper Catholic System in 2003. [1]
In the mid-1870s St. Joseph's was established as the first Catholic parish in Carroll. They established a parish cemetery south of the city cemetery in 1876. [3] In 1885, Saints Peter and Paul Parish was created for German speaking Catholics. They established their own cemetery south of St. Joseph Cemetery the following year.
