The Lynx was the Interislander's fast ferry service across Cook Strait. Pressured by Christchurch businessman Brooke McKenzie and his ill-fated Sea Shuttles NZ fast ferry service, the Interisland Line chartered the HSC Condor 10 to operate a fast service across the strait for the 1994/95 summer. DEV Aratere is a roll-on/roll-off rail and vehicle ferry operated by KiwiRail in New Zealand. Built in 1998 for the then-private company Tranz Rail and lengthened in 2011, she operates four daily crossings on the Interislander service across Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton each day (with six crossings over the December/January period).
As of 2022, the two companies still hold a duopoly on interisland ferry services. As well as operating across the Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton, Strait Shipping has in the past also operated freight shipping between Wellington and Napier, also in the North Island, and Nelson and Lyttelton in the South Island.

The strait is named after James Cook, the first European commander to sail through it, in 1770. [4] In Māori it is named Te Moana-o-Raukawa, which means The Sea of Raukawa. Raukaua is a type of woody shrub native to New Zealand. [5]
MS Santa Regina is a roll-on/roll-off ferry that was in service for Strait Shipping Ltd in New Zealand. The ferry was built for overnight services between Marseille and Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. Santa Regina was the flagship vessel for the Bluebridge ferry service, which runs from Wellington to Picton up to four times a day.
TEV Rangatira was a passenger ferry that sailed the Wellington to Lyttelton route between 1931 and 1963. She was the first turbo-electric vessel (TEV) to arrive in Australia or New Zealand waters. [1] During the Christmas season she would also run trips between Wellington and Picton.
Arahura's last scheduled passenger voyages were on 29 July 2015, operating the 14:45 sailing to Picton and the 18:45 sailing to Wellington. [11] The last freight journey took place over the following night. [citation needed] She had completed more than 52,000 crossings and 13 million km with four million passengers carried.
