Mai (Nepali: माई) is a municipality out of four municipalities of Ilam District of Province No. 1 of Nepal. It was formed in May 2017 with merging some VDC . Mahamai , Danabari and Chisapani VDCs were merged.
Ilam 2 incorporates Chulachuli Rural Municipality, Mangsebung Rural Municipality, Phakphokthum Rural Municipality, Deumai Municipality, wards 1–9, 11 and 12 of Ilam Municipality and wards 6–8 of Mai Municipality.
The municipality of Ilam is the district headquarters and is about 600 km (370 mi) from Kathmandu. Ilam attracts many researchers and scientists for the study of medicinal and aromatic plants, orchids, rare birds and the red panda. Ilam stretches from the Terai belt to the upper hilly belt of this Himalayan nation.
Ilam (Ilam Bazar; the core area) was established as the headquarters of Ilam Gauda in 1818 (1875 BS) [3] and was declared as "Ilam Municipality" in 1958 [3] but gazetted to "Nepal Rajpatra" only in 1962. During the Panchayat System in Nepal (in 1960), the municipality used to be known as Ilam Nagar Panchayat. [3]
There are a total of 10 municipalities in Ilam in which 4 are urban and 6 are rural. According to Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development Maijogmai has an area of 172.41 square kilometres (66.57 sq mi) and the total population of the municipality is 21044 as of Census of Nepal 2011.
