John Marsh (31 May 1752 – 31 October 1828) was an English gentleman, composer, diarist and writer born in Netherseal, Derbyshire, England. [1] A lawyer by training, he is known to have written more than 350 compositions, including at least 39 symphonies.

[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] He served as the United States Secretary of the Army from 1981 to 1989, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Virginia from 1963 to 1971.
Marsh was the son of a solicitor at Wigan, Lancashire, where he was born on 24 October 1818.He was educated at Warrington grammar school under Thomas Vere Bayne. On the death of his father, his guardian was his uncle John Fitchett, and Marsh later succeeded to his business as a solicitor.
