The council was created in 1974, when local government in England was reformed and the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire was created, governed by a county council and seven district councils. On 1 April 2023, the districts were abolished and the county council took on their responsibilities, becoming a unitary authority.
The non-metropolitan county has an area of 2,483 square miles (6,430 km 2), and, with the City of York and the boroughs of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees (south of the River Tees), forms the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. [6] It is governed by North Yorkshire Council.
In 1904 the London County Council became a local education authority, with the abolition of the London School Board.
