Alfa Laval AB is a Swedish company, founded in 1883 by Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm. The company started by providing centrifuges to dairies to be used to separate cream from milk.
Smaller versions of separators were called table-top models, for small dairies with only a few cows or goats. Gustaf de Laval's construction made it possible to start the largest separator factory in the world, Alfa Laval AB. [6] The milk separator represented a significant industrial breakthrough in Sweden.
In 1963 the company was renamed from AB Separator to Alfa-Laval (spelled with a hyphen until 1993). In 1991 Alfa-Laval was bought by Tetra Pak. In 1993 the division which produced dairy and farming machinery was split from Alfa Laval and named Alfa Laval Agri. Both companies became part of the Tetra Laval Group.
A decanter centrifuge applies a force equivalent to several thousand G's, which reduces the settling time of the particles. It is also favoured to maintain a large G-force, which will result in an improved separation. [8] The rate at which sedimentation occurs is an important characteristic of the decanter centrifuge separation process.
