Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) or aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are clean alternatives for traditional organic-water solvent extraction systems.. ABS are formed when either two polymers, one polymer and one kosmotropic salt, or two salts (one chaotropic salt and the other a kosmotropic salt) are mixed at appropriate concentrations or at a particular temperature.
For example, if the feed is a saturated liquid, q = 1 and the slope of the q-line is infinite (drawn as a vertical line). As another example, if the feed is saturated vapor, q = 0 and the slope of the q-line is 0 (a horizontal line). [2] The typical McCabe–Thiele diagram in Figure 1 uses a q-line representing a partially vaporized feed.
This pregnant leach solution (PLS) is pumped to an extraction mixer settler where it is mixed with the organic phase (a kerosene hosted extractant). The copper transfers to the organic phase, and the aqueous phase (now called raffinate) is pumped back to the heap to recover more copper.
Phase 1 is typically an organic solvent and 2 an aqueous phase. Laboratory-scale liquid-liquid extraction. Photograph of a separatory funnel in a laboratory scale extraction of 2 immiscible liquids: liquids are a diethyl ether upper phase, and a lower aqueous phase. Schematic representation of a Soxhlet extractor:
The two liquids (typically an aqueous phase (heavy) and an organic phase (light)) enter the annular mixing zone where a liquid-liquid dispersion is formed and extraction occurs as solutes (e.g. dissolved metal ions) are transferred from one phase into the other. Inside the rotor, the liquids will be separated into a heavy (blue) and a light ...
This occurs in five steps: 1) preparation of the separatory funnel with the two phase solvent system, 2) introduction of the compound mixture into the separatory funnel, 3) vigorous shaking of the separatory funnel to mix the two layers and allow for mass transfer of compounds in and out of the phases, 4) The contents of the separatory funnel ...
The reaction is performed in a distillation apparatus so the formed alkene product can be distilled off and collected as the reaction proceeds. The water produced by the reaction as well as some acid will co-distill, giving a distillate mixture (2). The product is isolated from the mixture by the following work-up: [3]
the reaction steps presented here are just a part of the reaction sequence, see reference for more details. Photocatalytic oxidation with TiO 2: [15] TiO 2 + UV → e − + h + (irradiation of the photocatalytic surface leads to an excited electron (e −) and electron gap (h +)) Ti(IV) + H 2 O ⇌ Ti(IV)-H 2 O (water adsorbs onto the catalyst ...
