This list of deepest mines includes operational and non-operational mines that are at least 2,212 m (7,257 ft), which is the depth of Veryovkina Cave, the deepest known natural cave in the world. The depth measurements in this list represent the difference in elevation from the entrance of the mine to the deepest excavated point.
Mponeng is an ultra-deep tabular gold mine in South Africa in the Witwatersrand Basin of the Gauteng Province. [1] Previously known as Western Deep Levels No1 Shaft, the mine began operations in 1986. [2] It is one of the most substantial gold mines in the world in terms of production and magnitude, reaching over 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) below the ...
The mine is near the town of Carletonville in South Africa. At approximately 3.9 kilometers (2.4 mi) deep, it is home to the world's second deepest mining operation, rivalled only by the Mponeng Gold Mine, formerly Western Deep Levels No.1 Shaft. TauTona was temporarily closed in 2018. [2] The mine was one of the three Western Deep Levels mines.
The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.75 miles (1,210 m) deep, [5] 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (3.0 sq mi; 770 ha; 7.7 km 2). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. [2]
The mine has a steady decline plunging to 1,774 feet below sea level. The mine is the deepest point in the United States where a car can be driven, down a ramp used by specialist mining vehicles. In 2022, Eagle Mine was used to set a Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change achieved by an electric vehicle. [1] [2]
An open pit mine began operation in 1882, and moved to underground mining by 1900 for safety reasons. From 1901 until the end of active mining in 1962, the Soudan Mine was owned by the United States Steel Corporation's Oliver Iron Mining division. By 1912 the mine was at a depth of 1,250 feet (381 m). [4]
In the beginning, surface mining was used, but the mine has been mined with the sublevel caving mining method since the 1960s. In 1985 reserves for the Kiruna Mine were 1,800 million tonnes grading 60–65% iron and 0.2% phosphorus. [26] [1] As of 2018 the Kiruna Mine had Proven and Probable Reserves of 683 million tonnes grading 43.8% iron. [27]
In 1915, the Morro Velho mine reached a vertical depth of 5,824 feet (1,775 m), which made it the deepest mine in the world. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The miners continued going deeper, and the mine kept the title of world's deepest until 1928, when the Village Deep mine in South Africa reached a vertical depth of 8,000 feet (2,400 m), exceeding the depth of ...
