Mount Airy / ˈ m aʊ n t ər i / [4] is a city within Surry County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 10,676, an increase of 288 (+2.8%) from the 2010 census count of 10,388. [5] As of 2020, the city is the most populous municipality in Surry County.
The district encompasses 187 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding industrial and residential sections of Mount Airy. They were primarily built between about 1880 and 1930 and include notable examples of Late Victorian and Bungalow / American Craftsman architecture.
Mount Airy's main commercial district lies along stone-paved Germantown Avenue, which also serves as the boundary between East and West Mount Airy. The neighborhood has a variety of independent shops, restaurants, art galleries, clothing stores, coffee shops, a gastropub , wine bar, fitness centers, and professional offices.
A group of early-20th century commercial structures represent the rebuilding of Mount Airy's downtown after a series of fires between 1903 and 1926. The residential areas are characterized by houses illustrating vernacular forms and popular stylistic influences of the late 19th and early 20th century. Three churches are located within the district.
The museum, which houses the world's largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia, is located in Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina. [1] Much of the museum's collection was acquired by Griffith's friend and the founder of Andy Griffith Museum, Emmett Forrest. [2] The facility opened to the public on September 26, 2009. [3]
Continuing north through Rural Hall, King, and Pilot Mountain, it reached downtown Mount Airy, before continuing on north into Virginia, via Old Fancy Gap Road. By 1929, US 121 was rerouted south of Winston-Salem along Spur Street; its old alignment remained part of NC 77. In late 1934, both US 121 and NC 66 were replaced by US 52.
U.S. Route 52 passes through the town of Pilot Mountain near the mountain, which is about 20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, and the city of Mount Airy is 14 miles farther north. Pilot Mountain has two distinctive features, named Big Pinnacle and Little Pinnacle.
