Squashfs is a compressed read-only file system for Linux. Squashfs compresses files, inodes and directories, and supports block sizes from 4 KiB up to 1 MiB for greater compression. Several compression algorithms are supported. Squashfs is also the name of free software, licensed under the GPL, for accessing Squashfs filesystems.
Files compressed by compress are typically given the extension ".Z" (modeled after the earlier pack program which used the extension ".z"). Most tar programs will pipe their data through compress when given the command line option "-Z". (The tar program in its own does not compress; it just stores multiple files within one tape archive.)
On update, ZPAQ divides the input files into fragments, computes their SHA-1 hashes, and compares them to the hashes stored in the archive. If there is a match, then the fragments are assumed to be identical, and only a pointer to the previously compressed fragment is stored. Otherwise the fragment is packed into a block to be compressed.
The Linux kernel has included Zstandard since November 2017 (version 4.14) as a compression method for the btrfs and squashfs filesystems. [16] [17] [18]In 2017, Allan Jude integrated Zstandard into the FreeBSD kernel, [19] and it was subsequently integrated as a compressor option for core dumps (both user programs and kernel panics).
FreeArc uses LZMA, prediction by partial matching, TrueAudio, Tornado and GRzip [7] algorithms with automatic switching by file type. Additionally, it uses filters to further improve compression, including REP (finds repetitions at separations up to 1gb), DICT (dictionary replacements for text), DELTA (improves compression of tables in binary data), BCJ (executables preproccesor) and LZP ...
The compressed ROM/RAM file system (or cramfs) is a free (GPL'ed) read-only Linux file system designed for simplicity and space-efficiency. It is mainly used in embedded and small-footprint systems. Unlike a compressed image of a conventional file system, a cramfs image can be used as it is, i.e. without first decompressing it.
