Black Lake is a lake located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Olympia, Washington. [2] [3] It has two outflows; the Black River, which drains southwest into the Chehalis River and thence to Gray's Harbor and the Pacific Ocean, and Percival Creek, which drains northeast into Capitol Lake and thence into Puget Sound.

The Black River is a tributary of the Duwamish River in King County in the U.S. state of Washington. It drained Lake Washington until 1916, when the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal lowered the lake, causing part of the Black River to dry up. It still exists as a dammed stream about 2 miles (3.2 km) long.

Before construction of the canal in 1916, Lake Washington's outlet was the Black River, which joined the Duwamish River and emptied into Elliott Bay. When the canal was opened the level of the lake dropped nearly nine feet (2.7 m). [13] The canal became the lake's sole outlet, causing the Black River to dry up and disappear.
