The hotel's architect was David Childs, the head of the Washington, D.C., office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. [3] [4] Boston Properties entered into an agreement to have the Hyatt Hotels Corporation manage the hotel, and to brand it as a luxury Park Hyatt. Ground for the hotel was broken on October 31, 1984. When the modern Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company was created in the mid-1980s, they assumed management of the hotel. [7] The hotel was in bankruptcy from 1986 until 1988. [ 8 ] Al Anwa USA, controlled by Saudi Arabian Sheik Abdul Aziz bin Ibrahim al-Ibrahim, bought the hotel in 1989 [ 9 ] and renovated it at a cost of $15 million.
