The St Luke's Vestry was incorporated as local government body and appointed one member to the Metropolitan Board of Works. In 1867 a new vestry hall was completed at a cost of £6,400 (equivalent to £715,801 in 2023) on the St Luke's Workhouse site in the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch, fronting City Road.
St Luke's is an area in London, England and is located in the London Borough of Islington. It lies just north of the border with the City of London near the Barbican Estate, and the Clerkenwell and Shoreditch areas. The area takes its name from the now redundant parish church of St Luke's, on Old Street west of Old Street station.
A local act in 1782 [a] enabled the St Luke's Vestry to build the new workhouse and offices just over the boundary in the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch at a cost of £2,000 (equivalent to £310,547 in 2023). [1] In 1867 a new vestry hall was completed on the site, fronting City Road. [2]
The following year the font and organ case were moved to St Giles' church, the reredos and altar rails to St Andrew Holborn, and the roof was removed for safety reasons. [13] The crypt was bricked up in 1964. [14] The empty shell of St Luke's became a dramatic ruin for some 40 years, overgrown with trees, despite being a Grade I listed building.
