Southcoast Health is an affiliation of three partner hospitals located in the southeastern portion of Massachusetts.The organization was founded in June 1996. The three partner hospitals had been in talks for a merger since late 1995 after pressure from healthcare organizations in the Providence and Boston areas. [1]

CoxHealth started on Thanksgiving Day, in 1906, when Ellen Burge, the widow of a prominent Springfield lawyer, donated her frame duplex on Jefferson Avenue to be used as a Methodist hospital. It was named Burge Deaconess Hospital in her honor. The Burge Hospital grew due to the great need for expert healthcare in Southwest Missouri.
The need for a new hospital on the Springfield side of the Willamette River became evident in 1948 when the river flooded, cutting off access to the existing Sacred Heart Medical Center in neighboring Eugene.
