The longest period of time either school has held the trophy is 12 years, by St. Ignatius (1974–1985). Although the schools had been rivals since the late 1800s, the Bruce–Mahoney Trophy was not inaugurated until 1947, and at the time only consisted of boys sports (both schools were all-boys institutions until the late 20th century).
The words and music of St. Ignatius' alma mater were composed by the school's band director, Mikey Eaton, in August 1937. His band debuted the alma mater at halftime during a football game on October 1, 1937, replacing their customary "Victory March". In 1958, St. Ignatius gave St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati permission to adapt the song.

In the fall of 1969, Father Harry Carlin moved SI to its current Sunset District campus, whereupon the current name, St. Ignatius College Preparatory, was adopted. [5] Though founded as an all-boys school, SI became coeducational in 1989 and is now home to over 1,500 male and female students. The school celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2005. [4]
