In 1947 the company installed the electric "neon" sign that is atop the main building, since it was erected it has been the largest electric sign in Cedar Rapids. The August 10, 2020 derecho caused major damage to the old neon sign, on June 1 and 2, 2021, the sign was replaced by a nearly identical sign using LED's, but kept the same historic look.

Cedar Rapids was platted on the east bank of the Cedar River as Rapids City in 1841, and it was incorporated in 1849. Kingston was established on the west bank of the river in 1852, and it was annexed by Cedar Rapids in 1870. The streets were laid out parallel and perpendicular to the river, which flowed from the northwest to the southeast.

The Monster circular ride used to call the land under Iron Dragon's transfer track home. Monster closed on Labor Day weekend in 1986 so Iron Dragon construction could begin. Planning for Iron Dragon began in 1985, the same year the Frontier Lift cable car ride (similar to the Sky Ride found on Cedar Point's main midway) opened for its final season.
