The high school, called Academy of the Americas High School (Spanish: Escuela Preparatoria Academia de las Américas), began in the 2014–2015 year with ninth grade students enrolled. As of 2014 it was one of two senior high school programs in southwest Detroit, along with Western International High School . [ 2 ]

[2] It closed in 2012. The school served Boynton–Oakwood Heights, Delray, and Springwells [3] from September 1916 until June 2012.
Closure criteria were initially based on test scores, then, after significant pushback from Detroit families, based on school capacity. [9] At this point, Pershing was only at 25% capacity and had test scores in the bottom 5% for 2014, 2015, and 2016, and so was named one of 24 schools slated to close in June 2017.

On December 2, 2002, a 15-year-old student brought a handgun to the high school and then took the gun out during class and accidentally shot himself in the leg. On January 13, 2006, gunshots were fired just outside the school. No one was injured. On January 11, 2013, a student was wounded by a shooting at the high school during a basketball game.
