The compilers of the chart changed several times and in January 1972 the chart changed to one based on sales from manufacturers to retailers. From October 1975 to February 1977 the chart was compiled from votes from readers in the Evening Herald newspaper. There was a separate Irish and International artists chart for a time during this period.
Of these, eighty-six songs have reached their peak during 2021. Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy and Italian producers Meduza took the first number one single of the year, with their track "Paradise". In doing so, Kennedy became the first Irish act to replace themselves twice at number one, replacing the last number one of 2020, "Giants". [2]
