Goku incapacitates Salza and attacks Cooler. After Goku proves to be a worthy opponent, Cooler reveals that he discovered a new transformation above Frieza's capabilities. Goku is pummeled by Cooler, who boasts and mocks him. However, after seeing a bird die from wounds inflicted by their fight, Goku reflects on the well-being of his loved ones.
Goku resumes his fight with Frieza, while Gohan flees back to Goku's spaceship. King Kai immediately contacts the Grand Elder and quickly informs him of the situation. The Grand Elder then sends Dende to Porunga in order to use the final wish to teleport everyone on Namek to Earth, except for Frieza.
Goku has entered the battlefield stronger than ever and prepares to fight Frieza alone. It seems that Goku might become a Super Saiyan, as he easily deflects Frieza's energy attacks. As Vegeta taunts Frieza, claiming that Goku is the "real Super Saiyan", the tyrant easily finishes him with an energy beam to the heart and a cruel bout of laughter.

Goku has finally arrived on Namek, and finds Krillin, Gohan and Vegeta near death. He gives them all a Senzu bean, and prepares to fight the Ginyu Force. With a single blow to the gut, he puts Recoome out of commission. Goku's training at 100x normal gravity has exponentially increased his strength.
Goku later names his first son Gohan in his grandfather's honor. In the anime, he later appears as an assistant to Annin (アンニン), the ruler of the "magical furnace".
