Its 145,000 members make it the largest union in the state. It is a merged affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA), and is a member of the AFL–CIO.
This organization became the oldest PTA of service in Dade County when the name was changed in 1918.
