Classic FM broadcasts nationally on FM, DAB+, Freeview, satellite and cable television and is available internationally by streaming audio over the internet.It is the only Independent National Radio station to broadcast on FM alongside BBC Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The radio station was known as Classic FM from 1994 until October 1st, 2019. Between 1994 and 1997, the format was almost identical to the Classic FM (UK) station, including the jingles, but it featured Dutch presentation [citation needed]. It currently transmits classical music 24 hours a day with no presenters.
Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and DAB-IP are both suitable for mobile radio and TV because they support MPEG 4 AVC and WMV9 respectively as video codecs. However, a DMB video subchannel can easily be added to any DAB transmission, as it was designed to be carried on a DAB subchannel.
The audio quality of Australian DAB is correspondingly low - only 80 kbps for ClassicFM, for example, and most channels have much lower bitrates than this. So DAB is in general well below the 128 kbps traditionally accepted as CD quality, and an interference-free FM broadcast will almost certainly provide better audio. [dubious – discuss]
